Welcome

Have you heard about compression socks, but feel completely overwhelmed about where to start? I know that feeling! I have created this informational section to share how compression garments can help to proactively improve your circulation, increase your energy and keep your legs healthy.

The Basics of Compression

What is Compression Therapy?

Compression stockings provide support to your veins and help the calf muscle pump blood back to the heart. Compression therapy applies a type of elastic device on limbs or other body parts to exert a controlled pressure on them. Thereby, the device squeezes the vein walls together and improves the circulatory rate. Compression stockings help reduce swelling and decrease the tired, aching feeling that you get in your legs as well as help anyone dealing with edema, varicose veins, spider veins, chronic venous insufficiency or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) that has been diagnosed by a physician.

Who can benefit from Compression Socks?

  • Athletes sometimes wear compression socks on their arms or hands to help improve blood flow and oxygen delivery while they’re working out, practicing or during competition. Some athletes also wear compression wraps to help speed up their post-workout recovery.
  • For someone who is confined to a wheelchair, compression socks can help improve blood flow and reduce swelling in the legs.
  • Pregnant women who are prone to swelling in their legs, feet or ankles may want to wear compression stockings to reduce chances of swelling. Most pregnant women see the best results with compression socks when they put them on in the morning as a preventative measure, versus putting them on after they’ve developed swelling.

  • Airplane passengers or crew or people who travel frequently on long or frequent air flights may want to wear compression socks to help increase circulation and reduce their risk of developing deep vein thrombosis or blood clots.
  • For people on their feet all day at work, compression socks can help reduce fatigue, pain or swelling by increasing blood and oxygen flow in the legs and feet.
  • For people who sit for long periods daily in sedentary office work environments often make our blood pool near our feet due to gravity, making it harder to push the blood back to our heart.
  • People with a history of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • For people who swell in their legs and feet. Swelling (medically referred to as “edema”) is caused by the build-up of fluid.  Compression stockings stimulate circulation, which reduces swelling and in turn, provides pain relief.  Improved blood flow to the muscles also reduces their susceptibility to injury and fatigue.
  • For people with varicose and/or spider veins.

Levels of Compression

  • Light Compression (15 – 20 mmHg) - For preventing tired and heavy legs after standing for long periods, during pregnancy.
  • Moderate Compression (20 – 30 mmHg) - For pronounced varicose veins, swollen legs, after venous inflammation, after sclerosis or an operation, for existing varicose veins during pregnancy.
  • Strong Compression (30 – 40 mmHg) - After deep vein thrombosis, constantly swollen legs, after venous ulcers.
  • Very Strong Compression (40 – 50 mmHg) - For pronounced swelling, lymphedema.

Are Compression Socks Ugly?

Today, stylish casual and dress compression socks and stockings are available in a variety of fibres like cotton, wool, spandex, and nylon. They come in bright colours, patterns, and prints. You will also find them in three lengths: knee-high, thigh-high, and pantyhose. You can choose from sheer and opaque. The options available are so beautiful and stylish, there's really no visible indication of their medical efficacy. You'll simply feel the benefits as you go through your day.

Advances in research and design also mean that today's compression socks offer more performance features. You can buy socks that absorb and wick moisture, have antibacterial, odour-reducing properties, and provide irritation-free flat toe seams.

How can compression socks increase the quality of your life?

Does your profession require you to sit or stand for most of the day? Whether you are a teacher, construction worker, bus driver, nurse, or hair stylist, whether your workplace is outdoors, in a car, or in a retail shop, your feet and legs do a great job in supporting you through your entire working day.

However, the venous system in the legs is under quite some strain. You may experience heavy legs after a long work day. Read here how we help you to protect and boost your leg health and how we support your lifestyle.

Graduated compression wear supports the proper function of your venous valves to ensure that the blood is pumped back to the heart more efficiently. As a result, your legs feel healthy and relaxed all day long, and your work performance in standing and sitting position increases.

Pregnancy

During your pregnancy, you may experience leg symptoms such as heavy, tired, aching legs and swollen feet. 6 in 10 women discover their first varicose vein during pregnancy; varicose veins often appear around the fourth month of pregnancy, but they will substantially diminish or disappear in most case after having given birth.

The appearance of venous leg symptoms is caused by the hormonal changes and increased blood volume necessary to help your baby grow. The growing uterus can press on and partially block some of your veins and the pregnancy hormones have dilated your veins, making blood return to your heart more difficult.

The pregnancy related body changes that lead to venous insufficiency symptoms do not immediately disappear after giving birth. Thus, it is advised to wear medical compression also for at least six weeks after your baby is born.
